climbers used to get to the top back in 1849
Here we are at Devils Tower. Devils Tower is a huge rock formation that stands by itself and can be seen from miles away. The scientist believe that it used to be the core of a volcano, but the Indians have many legends about how it was formed too. One of them is that some girls were playing and were chased by a bear, but they jumped onto a rock and began to pray to it. The rock began to grow and lift the girls higher to safety, but the bear jumped and clawed at the sides of the rock. The rock kept getting taller and taller until the girls were safe from the bear, but the marks of his claws still show on the tower today. The indians still believe that the tower is a sacred place and put prayer bundles around the tower. We got to see a bunch of those bundles that indians still place there while we walked around the base of the tower. We also got to see the ladder that the first climbers used to get to the top back in 1849. We are still enjoying seeing the wildlife like the little prairie dogs and got to see a couple of wild turkey too. After our visit to Devils Tower we drove to Cody, Wyoming. It was a long drive, but we are excited to see Yellowstone tomorrow. Keep checking in!
