Hawaii 2009 - Chain of Craters Drive

This was a fun day of exploring Mt. Kiauea
from the Chain of Craters Road.
We didn't actually get to see moving lava,
like the last time I was there,
but to see how the lava has shaped the
landscape and what plant & animal species
have returnedafter total destruction
is pretty cool!
Lava, lava everywhere!!
My amazing family below.
Family picture time since the sun
decided to grace us with it's presence,
for about a minute!

What a sight - a lava seashore for miles,
plus a sea arch to boot!
A palm grove that surprisingly survived
all the lava flows - for now anyways.
Among the miles of lava,
small, precious growth appears,
dotting the black, brown landscape with green!

Watch Out Luke!!
The lava flowed over the Chain of Craters Road.
Miles and miles of hardened lava!
Lava engulfed this traffic sign.
Looking back down the Chain of Craters Road
from the lava field.
More greenery with beautiful red flowers!
The sea arch up close and amazing!
Walking out to see some very old petroglyphs.
I like the ones that look like people.
These ones with holes, were supposedly
where the natives brought their newborn
child's umbilical chord and sacrificed it to
the gods for blessings on the child.
The drawings were incredible!
They were very complex and elaborate!

A beautiful, but very dead tree.
Ferns growing up in the cracks of the lava.
